Efron’s back lip kickflip out was one of my favorite tricks in Play Dead so I’m happy to see she’s getting featured treatment herein The Butterfly:
A William Strobeck production, so perhaps you can imagine something of how The Butterfly contains a full blooded larvae built withstanding bus stop winters cocooned in durable hoodie, lush spring blooms early this year, shirts off soon enough, shell cracked spray paint deck check shadowboxing, Seven Strong on black wheels, box logo box truck, whole crew cut closeup over industrial instrumental.
At 4 minutes we see bent down white hair of a woman in violet/black North Face fleece attempting to place one dollar bill into a Prize Cube’s money feed. She folds and refolds the currency’s forward flap horizontal so the machine accepts payment. She remains hunched facing the feed for a second, confirming the bill is accepted, perhaps looking for a button to press as she flinches before rising, turning to Bill behind the camera, you may recognize his mother. “Well, what do I do?” Bill moves in closer, “Just move that around,” toward the joystick. “Like this,” she confirms, then flinches when senses the first coordinated response of mechanical arm above prizes. Which to choose? “The butterfly.”
Silver claw appears situated directly above butterfly’s blue and pink form, so mother presses button and the claw extends down, dropping hooks around the butterfly. “Oh,” mother gasps quickly as clutches clench around toy, then “Ohhhh”, again, longer and rising as the bundled butterfly traces its flight above the arena, dropped into retrieval bin. “Oh-ho-hoh-hoh-oh,” she smiles and bends to retrieve. “Oh my god. That was fun.” She proudly shows the titular, smiling butterfly, built of a post-modern substance film still doesn’t let us touch, antennaed and smiling, blue raspberry taffy with pink outlines violet extract, overlaid to Efron in leopard print shot from up over her shoulder rolling goofy, meeting male gaze and turns her cheek as Sinead O’Conner details how “Nothing Compares 2 U” with growing symphony, camera pans down chain necklace, bare arms, silver studs on black leather belt, waffle grip push to fade.
BigscreenTV spot shot, “Wassup, world,” Strobeck projected candy Sandy Kim kiss as Arin boot scoots down stairs on a mis-take out of the empty fountain. Efron throws down from beginning of ledged path and traverses the spot with front nosegrind on last southbound bench, fountainside 360 flip, then front lipslide 270 shove on the wooden benching over 3 stair, relief clean as her coke white Half-Cabs. She pops onto Seaport slab then heelflips over a wharf post as Sinead sings about “dinner in a fancy restaurant” one may imagine the meals and lifestyle to which Bill treats his riders, cultural capitalized in see through mesh, not flexing, rather twirling her hair waiting for Bill’s “all clear” call before a trick we don’t see. Next Roosevelt Park run through Rivington footpath Efron heelflips an empty tree circle flat gap then pops crook down tilted exit planter with tailgrab as brief as her front truck’s bash pushing across Forsyth to pop proper varial heel before tugging hair trick mission accomplished .
Speedy approach blows back the monkey ears hoodie on her Paul Frank x MadeMe zip up for a Loisaida kickflip from one storefront’s two stair right exit onto the next’s banked threshold approachment. “Paul Frank for me as a teen was like Supreme is to you guys,” my girlfriend says. Single board props a Union Square tree grate so Efron varial heelflips over a pawn pole; nice to see this trick introduced as flatground line ender now a single. She frontside flip switch manuals an island pad in Sharpie’d undershirt, double knee’d black denim, Supreme grip tape check complimenting burgundy half cabs, draws applause then supporting nosemanual from Elise Hedge in floral headscarf.
Efron’s crooked grind tail grab reappears here, feature filmed frontside on green deck, propped grate to green plastic Our Town newsstand to street. Arin reappears to gap from fountain on shaped board into back 5050 claw clip along the same wooden bench where Efron finished her first line. Efron heelflip front 5-0s across angle iron atop Seaport block where Troy was getting nice earlier then Mike Ward pops up at Muni for a nollie backside flip off stage over can in Supreme FW21 arctic camo knit sweater. Efron back heels across Muni plaza then switch pushes to half cab crook nollie varial heel out. Hands on her puffy pastel white supreme beanie, she looks back to Bill then the boys, who are applauding and making their way over. The white VIOLET STATE hoodie not on website stands out for hugs all around as the ferris wheel spins.
Cut to black then we’re at SoHo triangle. American 2 shot, women in frame, Boys Lie one proclaims “Efron is the fucking shit”, pan over to Efron acid dropping over first beefy orange barrier, then jumping to grab another hop along on second hurdle. She then pushes and lands a bigflip facing passing bicyclist. Quick switch to regular lets her huck a back heel brought slow by toe drag, then Bill and the women’s cheers of love and support bring her back toward camera’s loving gaze for a second nature varial heel as bugles blare spot barrage. Cream Supreme popsicle back one eighty pogo over the orange barrier, gunslinger brings finger flip then backside finger flip as artillery bombardment continues through flatground fakie heel seal.
Catch Efron in an outdoor dining shed 360flipping her lit Marlboro light, a jittery tic perfected as a shaky cartoon caterpillar reminds us, Be patient, God isn’t finished with Efron yet. Text on black new video in the works, Violet’s 2023 is just beginning, a perennial bloomer. While some people consider violets a lovely decorative plant for gardens and landscaping, others consider them a bothersome weed because they display an aggressive behavior that is very hard to control, with Bill as the constant gardener as Efron pollinates.
